End of secret ownership
28.03.2014.
The vast majority of the Members of the European Parliament has decided to put an end to the secret on ownerships of companies and foundations. Transparency international EU office is one of the NGOs that praised for this decision.
643 Members of Parliament voted yes and 30 no to the revision of the Directive against money laundering.
European parliament recommended the creation of a public register of the real owners of companies and foundations. It will prevent people who conduct tax evasion, money laundering, crime or corruption from hiding behind anonymous companies and foundations.
"What happened in Ukraine showed us that EU rules against money laundering are not good enough. European parliament has recognized the need of creating a register to solve these problems. Governments of Member States should do the same", said Nienke Palstra from Transparency International EU office.
