The importance of participating in elections for the European Parliament

Participants of this forum, "Access to information and participation in decision-making in the European Union" urged the citizens of Zagreb on May 25 go to the polls for the European Parliament.

In Croatia 11 MPs are elected. MPs are elected by proportional representation and preferential voting. Last year's election was marked by extremely low voter turnout. on the polls left only 20.83 percent of voters.

"Such a poor turnout much said about the relationship between Croatian citizens against politicians, but also their awareness of the importance of europarlamentarnih choice. Croatia can not afford passive membership. Only through activity we stride forward. That is why the European Parliament should appoint representatives to actively protect and promote the interests of the Croatian. It is on the citizens to decide until May 25 decide who will do the best. European Parliament elections are just one of the features which citizens participate in the decision-making processes in the EU, and for successful participation in these processes it is necessary to  informed citizens better. By understanding what it means to be a citizen of the Union, you better make decisions in everyday life, but also to contribute to social and economic progress Croatian "said Davorka Budimir, president of TIC.

 

The importance of participating in elections to the European Parliament, spoke and Head of the Information Office of the European Parliament Violeta Simeonova Stanicic and Head of the Office for the programs and projects of the European Union, the City of Zagreb Jelena Rico.

 An expert in the areas of political and state administrative science Neven Simac told citizens not to vote for those who care only for Croatian interests, but for those who are thinking about the interests of the Union. 

EU representative office of Transparency International Ronny Patz and a representative of the Office of the Commissioner for Information Hrvoje Vindakijević reminded those present that the meeting of the European Parliament can be traced to the Internet via direct transfer to the translation into Croatian. 

The panel in the House of Europe, which was organized within the project "Citizens of the City of Zagreb = Citizens of the European Union," was moderated by Ivona Mendes, executive director of TI Croatian.
