Vote buying

15.06.2021.

Buying votes is literally a simple economic exchange.

Vote buying happens when a political party or candidate wants to buy the vote of a voter in the upcoming election. The purchase of votes can take various forms, such as the exchange of money, as well as the exchange of necessary goods or services.

This practice is often used to encourage or persuade voters to go to the polls and vote in a certain way. Although this practice is illegal in many countries, its prevalence is still present throughout the world.

“Vote buying is rarely an isolated action and perpetuates corruption throughout the political system. When a candidate decides to pay support instead of competing fairly for votes, he shows disrespect for democratic norms and a willingness to use illegal means. "- Thierry Uwamahoro
